We test children aged 3 to 18 years old.  As soon as you book a test appointment, you can rest assured that you're in safe hands. Testing can be conducted in our office in Scone or we can come to your home to do the testing, but we need a quiet space to do this.

Hearing test for children aren't always straightforward and often need to be adapted to meet the child's needs.  Our Audiologist follows evidence based practise when performing a hearing test and can consist of:

1.  Obtaining a health history for the child.  This provides some background information on any concerns the parent/carer/school might have, and any conditions that may affect the child's hearing.

2. Otoscopy - this involves looking into the child's ears to observe landmarks and determine if there is any obvious sign of a condition that may affect the child's hearing.

3. Tympanometry - this is a test of middle ear function and can be useful in determining if there is a build-up of fluid behind the child's eardrum/middle ear infection.

4. Audiometry

  • 3 -7yrs - Conditioned Play Audiometry.  This involves a listening game whereby the child is conditioned to respond to an auditory signal.  Most children find it fun and we adapt the game to suit the child's needs or abilities.

  • 7+ years - Pure Tone Audiometry.  This is where sounds are presented through headphones and the child is asked to press a button, raise their hand or signal in another way.

If necessary, we can also perform other testing in order to build a better picture of a child's hearing function.

A report of the test results is prepared on the spot and recommendations made for ongoing testing/monitoring/care if needed.
